UniFi vs. Verkada for industrial sites: an honest comparison

July 6, 2026 · Lightning Creek Technologies

When an industrial operator asks us “UniFi or Verkada?”, the honest answer is that both make genuinely capable cameras. The cameras aren’t where the decision gets made. The ownership and cost model is.

Verkada: subscription-first

Verkada’s model is cloud-native and license-driven. You buy the cameras, then pay a per-camera license — often multi-year — to keep them working. It’s a clean experience, and for organizations that want a single vendor’s hosted cloud and have the budget for recurring per-device licensing, it’s a defensible choice.

The trade-offs for a multi-site industrial operator: the recurring cost scales with every camera you add, and the footage and management live in the vendor’s cloud on the vendor’s terms.

UniFi: you own the stack

UniFi flips the model. You buy the hardware once, it records locally on a recorder you own, and there’s no per-camera license to keep it alive. For a yard with 10–20 cameras across a couple of buildings, that difference compounds fast over a 3–5 year horizon.

The catch people warn you about is that UniFi expects someone competent to design, configure, and manage it. That’s real — an unmanaged UniFi site can drift. Which is exactly the gap our model fills.

Where we land — and why

We standardize on UniFi and wrap it in management. You own the hardware outright — no license hostage situation, clean exit whenever you want — and we own the layer that makes it enterprise-grade: AI detection tuned to ignore conveyors and dust, 60-day retention, VLAN-isolated camera networks, firmware patching, and 24/7 uptime monitoring.

You get the ownership economics of UniFi with the “it just works and someone’s watching it” experience people associate with Verkada. For most industrial sites, that’s the best of both.
