Security at sites where the internet barely reaches

Some of the sites that most need surveillance are the hardest to connect: a remote equipment yard, a rural property, a plant at the edge of the service map. The cameras are easy. Getting a reliable, isolated network to them is the real job.
The problem with “just use the site’s internet”
At remote sites there often isn’t any — or what exists is a single fragile connection the whole operation depends on. Hanging cameras off it creates two problems: the security system competes with operations for bandwidth, and a single outage takes everything down at once.
A connectivity-first approach
We design remote sites around the link, not as an afterthought:
- A dedicated uplink for the security system. Fiber where it’s available; fixed wireless, LTE, or low-earth-orbit satellite where it isn’t. The cameras get their own path so they never fight the business for bandwidth.
- Failover that assumes the primary will drop. A backup path — cellular or satellite — keeps monitoring alive when the main line is cut, which at remote sites is a matter of when, not if.
- An isolated camera network. The surveillance VLAN stays walled off from anything operational, so a compromise on one side can’t cross to the other.
- Remote management from our side. Once it’s up, we adopt and monitor it from anywhere — no truck roll to check on a healthy site.
Why this matters for rural and expanding operations
This is the same playbook we use for agricultural properties, remote industrial sites, and our expansion into rural Canada and the Bahamas — places where “call the local IT guy” isn’t an option. A remote site shouldn’t mean a blind spot.
